MARK ZONA SPEECHLESS AFTER REDFISH TRIP
"I Didn't Know a Place Like This Existed," said Zona

Story by Dan O'Sullivan

Venice, La. – The BASS ZONE staff loves to bring breaking news to the viewers, and we have a scoop that will undoubtedly set the balance of the fishing world in turmoil; a recent redfish outing in Louisiana left Mark Zona searching for words.

“I have no idea how to put into words what I saw down there,” Zona told The BASS ZONE from his home in Michigan after returning from the trip. “Greg Hackney and some of the other guys had been telling me about it, but I had no idea that things could be that good.”

The host of the “World’s Greatest Fishing Show, which airs on ESPN2 on Saturdays said that he had been redfishing before, but his previous outing could not compare to his recent excursion. “I met up with a guy I’ve known for a while named Mike Frenette,” Zona said. “Mike showed me a fishing world that I did not know existed on the planet.”

Zona said that Frenette found his charter business completely devastated by Hurricane Katrina, and that he had always wondered why anyone would rebuild to face that kind of devastation again; now he understands. “Mike has re-built things since the storm, and his operation is getting back to normal.”

Zona told The BASS ZONE that he hooked and landed so many giant redfish that he eventually had to call it quits. “After catching 20 to 30 giant fish my arms were so tired I had to tell Mike to take me home,” quipped Zona. “These fish are huge, up to 40 pounds, and we were catching them on bass gear. Spinning rigs spooled with braided line and a special bait were the ticket. (You will have to watch the show to see the special bait.)

When Zona finally decided to call it quits after feeling like he pitched a 10 inning shutout, his host was apologetic for the difficult fishing. “He looked at me and said, ‘Mark, I’m glad you got to experience this, but they weren’t really on.’” Zona said he whipped his head around and stared in amazement. “I couldn’t believe what he was saying, I looked at him like he was nuts; it was unbelievable fishing. Mark it down, every year I am alive, I will be making a trip to this place.”

While some might be concerned that one of our sports most known voices has been silenced by the experience; not to worry, his energetic speech patterns had returned by the end of the conversation.

You can watch the incredible action that Mark and Rob Newell experienced on the World’s Greatest Fishing Show sometime in January 2008.
