North Bend, Ohio. – Swimbaits are all the rage, and particularly desirable are the hollow bodied swimbaits made popular by the Basstrix Paddletail as anglers like Steve Kennedy and Jay Yelas exposed their effectiveness.
A year after Kennedy crushed his 122-pound, 14-ounce limit at Clear Lake, and a little less than a year after Yelas credited the type of bait as a major key to their success; many companies have a bait of this sort. YUM has just announced their acquisition of the Money Minnow, Berkley recently released their Hollow Belly, Luck ‘E’ Strike brought their Bass Magic to market and Strike King has their Shad–a-Licious; all require the purchase of a separate hook.

While getting the baits has been difficult, it has also been hard to get hooks, but thanks to Davis Bait Company, the hook situation has improved. Bassmaster Elite Series pro Bill Lowen contacted The BASS ZONE to tell us about the new X-Swim hooks.
“There has really been only one style of weighted hook out there, which is the extra wide gap style with lead molded in, but they’re tough to get,” Lowen said. “The XSwim and XSwim Weighted Screwlock hooks give us availability as well as options we haven’t had before.”
The Davis XSwim is a standard extra wide gap worm hook available in sizes 2/0 to 5/0 in weights that range from 1/16 to1/4-ounce. But, the XSwim Weighted Screwlock ranges to 8/0 and can weigh as much as 3/8-ounce. |
Lowen said that one of the features of the screwlock version that makes it unique is that it is available in a flat eye version that allows the bait to be rigged tighter to the hook for a more streamlined appearance. “The whole setup will be a little bit more compact, and I think that will help in attracting more bites.”
