UPDATE ON WATER LEVELS AT GRAND LAKE

Story by Dan O'Sullivan

Grove, Okla. – As Elite Series Pros launched their boats on Monday to practice for the Bassmaster Elite Series Sooner Run on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake, they did so on a lake that has been experiencing flooding and a lot of debris floating.

The BASS ZONE reported on Friday that the Grand River Dam Authority was completely aware of the situation and was going to be taking steps to make life easier on the pros and their partners. BASS ZONE spoke to a GRDA employee, Brent Davis, who is also a tournament angler, so he knows what the Elite Series Anglers are faced with.

“The GRDA has been aggressively working to lower the water level since it flooded the banks,” Davis said. “By Thursday of last week, the water level was at 750 feet; six feet above full pool. By this morning, the lake level was at 746.50 and still declining.”

Davis reported that as of Monday morning, the GRDA had closed all but one of the gates on the dam which had slowed the falling water, and that he expects things to be stable by Thursday’s blast off. “We have begun to stabilize the water level,” Davis told The BZ. “We have one gate open right now, which will keep the flow at 15,000 cubic feet per second outgoing, and 11,000 incoming; we should be at 744 to 745 feet by blast off”

Davis cautions anglers to take it easy while driving their boats, especially in low light conditions, because there is a lot of debris on the water. “There is still a lot of debris, so the guys will have to keep their eyes open.”

One piece of good news for competitors is that Davis said that the GRDA is scheduled to have the generators running 24/7 during the tournament; providing current to help keep the fish active and biting.

Stay tuned to BASS ZONE.com for continuing updates on the high waters, and as our on location coverage of the Bassmaster Elite Series Sooner Run starts Thursday, just more reminders that “It’s all about Being There!”
