CARRIER AND HEAD WIN TRITON EVENT AT GRAND
Over One Ton of Bass Weighed During the Event

The Triton Boats Tournament Trail proudly presented by Nichols Marine wrapped up the 2007 regular season this past Sunday, June 10th on Grand Lake. The teams were competing for a top prize of a fully-rigged Triton bass boat powered by a Mercury 150 motor. Second place was guaranteed a runner-up prize of $10,000 bucks and a great payout down throughout the rest of the field.

The tournament got underway Sunday morning with anglers being greeted with a warm and humid breeze while rain showers moved across the Grand Lake area throughout the day. However, of the three hundred and one (301) teams that hit the water Sunday, one hundred and ninety (190) had a five fish limit. Simply amazing that over half the field caught five fish limits! Stan Honeycutt and his tournament staff weighed in over 2700 pounds of largemouth bass. Another staggering statistic!

Leading the way and claiming the first place prize in this bass catching bonanza was the team of Allen Head and Gary Carrier. Allen and Gary always seem to land near the top of the Grand Lake leader board and this weekend was no exception. The pair took the first place prize, a Triton TR186 with Mercury 150 motor by weighing in a five fish limit at 21.01 pounds.

Second place ended in a two-way tie between the teams of Gary and Russell Hurd and Nick Frakes and Morgan Carlton. Both teams brought a limit of bass to the scales and both teams’ five fish tipped the scales at 20.80 pounds. Each team earned $7,500.00 for their efforts.

Fourth place went to the team of Keith Sedberry and Bryan Walker with 19.48 pounds which earned the pair $2,800.00.

Rounding out the top five was the team of Troy Pilcher and Damon Duncan with a limit of bass weighing 19.29 pounds. The duo pocketed $2,200.00 on the day.

Big Bass went to the team of Rex Elam and James Elam who brought a beautiful 6.50 pound largemouth to the scales to claim the 1,000.00 big bass award.

In addition the Triton Team Trail proudly presented the Nichols Marine Customer Appreciation Award to the team of Terry Canady and John Morvich. Terry and John won the $1,000.00 dollars with their strong finish.

The BASS ZONE caught up to the two top Grand Lake anglers and here’s what Allen Head and Gary Carrier had to say about their day on the water. “Right off the bat this morning we were really struggling, we started out pretty deep thinking they were pulled out and obviously they weren’t so we moved into a bank where we had started out deep and immediately caught two four pounders and a three pounder. Those fish were in 3 to 5 feet of water so we decided to go back to some of the holes we started on and try fishing a little shallower. We ended up catching a limit by around 9:00 this morning and then we moved to a little stretch of willow trees and caught our biggest fish of the day. We ended up culling about two more times throughout the day but that was really about it, the fish just seemed to be on rocky little flats or in the willows.”

Allen and Gary would also like to thank their sponsors for everything they do for them! “Jewel Jigs, Terminator Spinnerbaits, Ranger boats, Mercury Motors and Motorguide Trolling Motors, Berkley baits, Premier Powersports, Hamby’s and Abu Garcia.

The BASS ZONE would like to again congratulate Allen and Gary on their big win and we appreciate them sharing some information with the BASS ZONE viewers!

Gary and Russell Hurd one of the TWO second place teams had this to say about their day. “We headed down lake for the majority of our day today looking for the cleaner water mainly fishing some points and a few brushpiles. We had around 18 pounds by 9:30 this morning when the storm hit. Most of our fish came anywhere from 10 to 15 feet deep, and we had around 12 keepers total today. Around 1:00 this afternoon we knew we needed that kicker fish and since we had hit most of our big fish spots downlake we decided to head back toward the dirtier water to tried to find that one big bite and we ended up culling once but really only gained a few ounces. But we did what we could; this is usually our time of the year.”

Nick Frakes and Morgan Carlton the other second place team also shared a little information with the BASS ZONE, here’s what they had to say. “We fished mainly the mid-lake area today and most of our fish came on a custom jig made by Hook, Line & Sinker in Rogers, AR. We also caught a few fish on a buzzbait early this morning. We had around 10 keepers for the day, but everything we weighed came basically before the storm hit this morning.”

The BASS ZONE would also like to congratulate the rest of the top finishers for a great showing and thank them for the interviews.
