JOEL AND BUTCH BAKER WIN TRITON EVENT AT GRAND
A Blistering Limit Weighing 27.34 Gets the Win

The Triton Boats Tournament Trail proudly presented by Nichols Marine continued the 2007 season Sunday, April 15th at Grand Lake. Three Hundred and Twenty One (321) teams hit the waters of Oklahoma’s most popular tournament destination searching for that big five bass limit. Competing teams were again greeted by unseasonable cold temps tournament morning as the Oklahoma weather continued to play games with the anglers and the fish alike. However, as the day progressed and the sun warmed the Eastern Oklahoma skies, an unbelievable day unfolded.

At the conclusion of the day’s events the team of Joel and Butch Baker brought an impressive 27.35 pounds of bass to the scales. With a big bass of 6.65 pounds it’s easy to see what quality the entire five fish sack was comprised of. Joel and Butch easily outdistanced the second place team by almost SIX (6) pounds! Quite impressive indeed! For a first place prize the team takes home the Triton TR186 with Mercury 150 motor.

Second place went to Robert Heath and Brian Hanes with a five fish limit weighing 21.40 pounds. Robert and Brian took the $10,000.00 GUARANTEED to 2nd place!

In third place, Robby Guinn and Mike Shambaugh brought 21.09 pounds to the scales. The third place finish netted them $5,000.00!

The fourth place spot went to Billy Mitchell and Ronny Cooley with 20.28 pounds on their five fish and earned them $3,000.00.

Rounding out the top five and taking home a check for $2,500.00 was Tommy Junkins and Randy Smith at 19.05 pounds.

Steve Scott and Jim Weston brought the big bass of the event to the scales; the big 7.61 pound largemouth brought them the $1,000.00 big bass award.

In addition, new for 2007, the Triton Team Trail proudly presented the Nichols Marine Customer Appreciation Award to the team of Robby Guinn and Mike Shambaugh. Robby and Mike won the $1,000.00 dollars with their top 3 finish.

After claiming the first place spot the BASS ZONE caught up with today’s winners. Here’s what Joel and Butch had to say about a great day on the water. “We concentrated our efforts in the mid-lake area today. We practiced yesterday and had around 19 to 20 pounds with spinnerbaits on points so we had a little bit of an idea of what to do today. Well the wind didn’t blow today like it did yesterday so we picked up a Carolina Rig and caught a few little ones and then made a switch over to a rogue. We ended up catching 3 of the big ones on the rouge, one big one on a Carolina Rig and the other one on a jig. They were just around the points, secondary and main lake points. We really only had about 9 keepers today, but about every hour and a half to two hours we would catch a four or five pounder.” The team also wanted to thank Nichols Marine for the opportunity to fish a great tournament trail.

The BASS ZONE would like to again congratulate Joel and Butch on their big win and we appreciate them sharing some information with the BASS ZONE! Again, great job on a very impressive sack of fish.

Robert Heath and Brian Hanes the second place team had this to say about their day. “We started off around sailboat bridge and worked our way up into the Elk River without much luck, then came back out and back towards sailboat bridge and caught a couple of pretty good ones. Then we headed down towards honey creek and didn’t fair to well, so we headed back up where we had come from and basically got on a lucky bank and caught three good ones.” The team also noted that they “lived and died” by the jig today.

The third place team of Robby Guinn and Mike Shambaugh had this to say. “We caught most of our fish early, primarily throwing a spinnerbait. Which was a good thing because it got really tough on us as the day went on. Not having any wind really hurt us!” The team also said they fished basically in the mid-lake area today.

Big bass winners Steve Scott and Jim Weston had this to say about their beautiful 7.61 pound largemouth. “We had one lucky cast! She was sitting in about 2 foot of water and fell for jig. Other than that big one we had a pretty tough day. We couldn’t fool anymore like that!”

The BASS ZONE would also like to congratulate the rest of the top finishers for a great showing and thank them for the interviews.
