The GOT BASS Team Trail Tournament held its second event of the year on Grand Lake on Sunday, March 11th with the Stillwater Marine & Smoke Hollow Smokers Invitational.
The anglers launched out onto the waters of Oklahoma’s most popular bass tournament destination in the early morning hours looking for the five biggest largemouth bass they could find in order to claim the first place prize. Cloud cover dominated throughout the day as the forecast called for rain later in the afternoon.
However, at the conclusion of the dreary competition day the team of Kevin Apple and Michael Atwell brought a tournament limit of bass to the weigh-in scales good enough for the first place win at 15.58 pounds. Steve Fulps and Larry Shackleford had five fish good enough for 15.18 pounds and fell just short of the win landing in second place. Third place went to Scott Reed and Brad Harlow with 14.94 pounds on five fish. Robert Jones and Casey Sullivan had four fish that weighed in at 14.81 pounds, which took fourth place. Rounding out the top five with five bass weighing 14.71 pounds was the team of Jerry Wiessinger and Charlie Apperson.
The winning team of Kevin Apple and Michael Atwell agreed to provide the BASS ZONE viewers with a little information, here’s what they had to say. “We concentrated on the points today throwing rigs, jigs and jerkbaits. Basically we junk fished all day! We fished mid-lake all day and there was one other boat in the same area, fishing this event, but he had enough courtesy to let us fish our spots. In fact we left one spot and when we came back he gave it right back to us, so that was really huge for us. We also think that the clouds and wind may have helped us some. But that was about it!” The team also wanted to thank Land Rover of Tulsa for their support!
The BASS ZONE would like to again congratulate the winning team and thank them for the interview.
Steve Fulps and Larry Shackleford fell just short of the win and here’s what they had to say. “We hit a lot of main lake points from sailboat bridge all the way down past horse creek; we would catch one here and then one there. Anything from crankbaits, spinnerbaits and jigs seemed to be working for us. Basically no one bait in particular caught the bulk of our fish today. We actually had three good keepers in the boat before eight this morning, but overall we caught about 13 keepers on the day, we just had a hard time culling our two-pound fish. We caught about 3 different fish that all weighed the same and never could cull and that’s the difference between winning and coming in second.” The team also wanted to thank Quantum, Okie Bait and Tackle and Ranger Boats.
Third place went to Scott Reed and Brad Harlow with 14.94 pounds and they said, “we hit the Elk River today basically throwing some finesse stuff around boat docks or really anything that had some brush on it. That was the key for us! We just fished really slow and fell a little more than ˝ a pound short of the win.”
The BASS ZONE would like to thank all the competitors for the informative interviews and thank them for their time!
The GOT BASS Team Trail will continue the 2007 season on May 6th with the Jimmy Houston Marine, XCalibur & Humminbird Invitational at Lake Tenkiller. The morning launch and afternoon weigh-in will be held at the Chicken Creek Ramp.
