The Fisherman’s Choice LLC tournament trail kicked off the new season at Lake Texoma on Sunday. The launch ramps at Catfish Bay Marina were a busy place Sunday morning as the Charger staff helped unload 118 boats. Although the morning skies held a threat of severe weather, Mother Nature cooperated as shortly after take-off, the winds abated and the clouds began to break apart.
As the scales opened for the afternoon weigh-in, the temperatures had reached into the 70’s. The water temps ranged from the mid to low 50’s in the main lake areas and reached the 60 degree mark in protected backwater coves; a picture perfect March day that resulted in some quality fish being brought in.
The team of Gregory Reedy and Phillips Cummings brought the best five fish to scales for a total weight of 17.42 lbs. The Texas team also weighed the heaviest fish of the tournament, a 9.11 lb largemouth. For their efforts on Sunday, the duo received $5,185.00.
In second was a team from Ardmore that consisted of Dale Archer and Mark Pittman. Dale and Mark weighed in a limit of bass that totaled 14.80 lbs. The Pittman clan has earned a lot of money on Lake Texoma over the last couple of months and this team added an additional $2,480.00 to the tally.
Joe Kovelda and Tim Chapman finished the day in third with 14.67, good enough for a payday of $1,699.00. Rounding out the top five were the teams of Hanshew and Roberts in fourth with 14.30 and Moss and Moss in fifth with 13.54.
Former winners on the Charger Fisherman’s Choice LLC trail, the father/son team of Larry and Jason Conaway weighed n the day’s second largest bass at 8.94 pounds. Only able to add one more fish to their creel, the team ended the day in 12th. Overall, 118 teams produced 30 limits of bass and a total of 308 fish were brought to the scales.
Locals Win Big
Hailing from Denton and Dennison Texas, the team of Reedy and Phillips are regulars on Lake Texoma. Gregory runs GBass Reel Fitters, a full time guide service on Lake Ray Roberts and Lewisville. “I won’t share a lot of information, but I will say that we caught all our fish on typical winter time structure,” Gregory revealed. “The fish were where they were supposed to be and doing what they do this time of the year.”
It may sound simple, but the pair covered a big part of Lake Texoma to catch the winning weight. “I burned over 30 gallons of fuel today,” Reedy said. “We caught 15 or so fish, but only landed 5 keepers.”
Pittman on top again
The name Pittman has been at the top of leader boards on Texoma for several months now. On Sunday, Dale Archer and Mark Pittman continued that tradition by finishing second with 14.80 pounds. “We caught all our fish early and deep,” Dale said. “We fished on point and caught 7 keepers.”
Sponsored by the Skin Clinic and Ardmore Quick Lube, Pittman and Archer fished a primary point heading into a major creek arm. “Obviously, we knew the fish were there, it was just a matter of waiting them out.”
Last Minute Bite Helps
With only an hour left in the day, the team of Joe Kovelda and Tim Chapman pulled into an area and loaded the boat with enough weight to take third place. “We stop on a spot that neither of us had fished before,” said Joe. “In less than 45 minutes, we caught our limit and culled several times.
Joe revealed the area had wind blowing in on it and the water temperature was a few degrees warmer. “That’s fishing,” he said. “If we had been there all day long who knows what would have happened.” There bag was helped by one the few smallmouths weighed in on Sunday. It topped the scales at 5.55 pounds.
Once again Charger Fisherman’s Choice LLC executed a flawless tournament. From the pre-tournament meeting to the final weigh in, the staff at Charger was on hand to provide any help needed. Immediately following the weigh in, several door prizes were awarded including free entry into the next event. With four remaining regular season events, teams still have a chance to qualify the championship and be part of the drawing for the new Charger Pro Team 296 powered by a 200 hp Mercury outboard.
