BUTCHER'S LEAD CUT ON DAY TWO

Quinn, Scroggins and KVD Lurking

Story by Dan O'Sullivan, Photos by Mark Jeffreys

Guntersville, Ala. Bass fishing can be a hit or miss proposition, and that can be a frustrating thing for a person who casts for a living. No angler on the 2007 Bassmaster Elite Series Roster has exhibited that hit or miss image better than 35-year-old Terry Butcher of Talala, Okla. Butcher’s season has been one of misses; that is until the Elite Series made its appearance at the Southern Challenge presented by Purolator.

Having grabbed the lead at the weather shortened Southern Challenge on the first day of competition, Butcher backed up his 26 pound performance with a solid limit of 16 pounds, 6 ounces and was able to stay in the saddle long enough to lead the top 12 into the final day of competition.

Butcher’s two day total of 42 pounds, 9 ounces enabled him to hold on to a slim eleven ounce margin over second place Jason Quinn, the 34-year-old pro from lake Wylie, S.C.

Quinn reported going to his backup pattern on the second day of competition, and while his 19-pound, 4-ounce limit was not as big as day one, his two day total of 41-pounds, 14-ounces puts him in striking distance of his first Elite Level win.

Less than a pound behind the two leaders in third place is 38-year-old Terry Scroggins of Palatka, Fla. who smashed a 20-pound, 1-ounce limit to give him a two-day total of 41 pounds, 3 ounces. Lurking only five ounces behind Scroggins is three time Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year, Kevin Van Dam of Kalamazoo, Mich. The 39-year-old pro finds himself in the fourth place position after his second day, 19-pound, 10-ounce limit gave him a total of 40 pounds, 14-ounces.

Rounding out the top five is 37-year old Yusuke Miyazaki from Mineola, Texas. Who bagged an impressive 20-pound, 12-ounce sack to grab fifth place with a total of 39 pounds, 2 ounces.

Here is the rest of the top 12:
6. Mark Tucker 37-12
7. Kelly Jordan 37-0
8. Shaw Grigsby 35-12
9. Kotaro Kiriyama 35-9
10. Ben Matsubu – 35-1
11. Timmy Horton – 34-11
12. Alton Jones 34-6

Butcher Had to Go to Backup Pattern
Terry Butcher made his primary stop in the morning on the spot that produced his early 22-pound limit, and was only able to get one 15-inch fish there in two hours, he went to his backup stuff after that. “I started to get a little concerned this morning early,” Butcher said. “I know that I need a couple of big bites to have a really good bag out here, and that didn’t happen.”

When his backup pattern failed to produce results, Butcher left the main river and ran to his backup area, picked up his flipping stick and pulled together his 16-6. “I am in the backwater areas, and I am relatively unbothered,” said Butcher. “I know other guys have a lot of traffic around them, but I don’t, and that is good because I am going to run the same stuff tomorrow.”

Quinn Went to Backup Too, Feels Confident
When Jason Quinn’s primary area didn’t work out because the winds muddied the water, he made a switch to his backup pattern. Although his limit was over 19 pounds, he didn’t have his first limit until one o’clock, but culled them all before weigh-in.

“I fished main stretches of bank today, stuff most everyone else is passing over,” Quinn said. “It my typical type of program, and I ran them with three or four different baits.” Quinn said that he has one area that has several bedded fish in, “I pulled a six-pounder and a four-pounder off of it, then left it alone,” he remarked. “There are several more fish in that area, including one that looks to be 10 pounds, but that won’t be my main stuff, tomorrow, I am going to my deeper structure and swing for the fences.”

Scroggins, Likes His Chances
“Big Show” Terry Scroggins went to his first morning spot and found them covered by local boat traffic, so he ran around looking for more shad spawn areas to key on. “My partner wore me out on my first little hump this morning, and while he can’t tell me anything, I looked at what he was throwing to try and match it,” Scroggins reported. “He was throwing a Booyah spinnerbait, so I tied it on and caught a few fish.”

After the early shad spawn bite died off by 9:30 a.m., Scroggins went to his bed fish that he had located and then to his afternoon deep cranking bite to bolster his weight. “I’ve got two or three things going on here between the shad spawn and my other things,” Scroggins exclaimed, feeling good. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow, I think I can catch ‘em again!”

Van Dam Still Waiting for Good Day.
Kevin Van Dam is looking for his 11th BASS victory, and if things go right tomorrow, he likes his chances. “Yesterday and today were my worst two days on this lake the whole week,” said Van Dam. “I still haven’t gotten the big bite that I need to put me over the top, but I am definitely on the winning fish.”

Van Dam said that there was no current in his area today because they were pulling any water, but that if he gets some wind and some clouds, or current he expects to have a big day. “ I have a lot of areas to fish, my biggest problem is choosing where to start,” Van Dam exclaimed. “I will throw three baits all day, they are big fish baits, and I am in big fish areas, if all things go right, I feel good about my chances tomorrow.”

     Miyazaki Running Two Programs
Yusuke Miyazaki said that he is not doing anything special, basically letting the conditions dictate when he throws plastics or his reaction bait pattern. “ A lot relies upon the wind,” said Miyazaki. “When I have strong winds, I go with the spinnerbait or crankbait, but if it is calm, I throw a Texas rigged Senko or a Brush Hog.”

Miyazaki said that he got a little stressed out today because his fishing day was not as good as day one. “I caught 30 to 40 fish yesterday, and only eight today,” he continued. “My bites were a little bigger today, so that is good, I’ll just keep trying tomorrow.” Miyazaki said he is fishing a textbook post spawn pattern, catching fish between “where they spawned and where they will stay for summer.”

Tucker Hurt by Locals
Mark Tucker went back to the same area he fished last year at Guntersville and did well on day one, but found the fish not as aggressive on day two. “I lost a couple of fish today that kept me from a 22-pound bag, they just weren’t taking the bait as aggressively as yesterday,” Tucker said. “I think one of the reasons is that there are so many locals fishing that area that the fish have become spooky.”

Tucker said that he is fishing shallower than most competitors, and there is a reason. “The area I am on is a big spawning flat, and the shad are spawning so thick that the bass haven’t retreated to the river channel yet,” Tucker reported. “ Hopefully there won’t be as much traffic tomorrow, but if so, I will look for other areas, and just keep fishing, my pattern should work anywhere on the lake.”

Notable:
Unusual:
The Southern Challenge marks the first event in 2007 without Skeet Reese in the top 12; including the Bassmaster Classic at Lay Lake, and the first four stops on the 2007 Elite Series schedule. This was Reese’s first tournament without a paycheck since the final major of the 2006 season.

Stunner:
The Southern Challenge is the fourth straight event in which 2006 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli has failed to cash a check for a top 50 finish.

Amazing:
Both Ben Matsubu and Kelly Jordan made huge moves to make the top 12 cut. Matsubu pounded out a 19-pound, 6-ounce limit to move from 31st place to 10th. While Jordan smashed a 21-pound, 15-ounce bag to leap from his 36th place day one position to a 7th place.

Ungracious Hosts:
Several anglers reported boat traffic problems throughout the day, Jason Quinn, Kevin Van Dam, and Mark Tucker; all in the top 12, said that local traffic may have contributed to lighter limits on Saturday. Van Dam reportedly had as many as 20 to 25 boats following him, and Tucker said that some locals fished within a cast of him and boated fish on his best area.
