Del Rio, TX – It looks like God is a bass fisherman for there is no doubt that he heard the prayers of many who wanted sunny conditions, unfortunately he didn’t waive the wind. Weights rebounded big time over Friday – due in large part to the high skies – but many pros still found fighting the south Texas breeze tough. Unfortunately for them, the final day looks to be tougher weather-wise as forecast calls for high winds, clouds, and the potential for heavy rain.
There were some surprising departures from the leaderboard. Gary Klein’s methodical jig bite that he had used to put himself in a position to win petered out Saturday. As a result, after vying for the lead on Saturday, Klein was sent packing with a combined weight of 60-15 in 27th place. “It’s just such a humbling sport,” he explained. “I’m going to go back and study what happened and see what I can learn.”
Another of the big movers was Fred Roumbanis on Friday, who was the day’s Berkley Heavyweight with 33-2. Roumbanis couldn’t back up the stellar day and fell short of making the cut weighing 20-14 Saturday and finishing his tournament in 19th place. “Thursday really hurt me,” he explained. “I just dug myself into a hole that I couldn’t get out of.”

Elite Series rookie Derek
Remitz, whose limits have been growing by leaps and bounds all week, took over the first place slot Saturday with a monster bag weighing 30-7. Remitz’s three-day total weight of 80-1 out-paced second place by almost three pounds, but it could have been worse as Remitz had a four-ounce “fish care” penalty awarded him.
Kennedy, being unseated from the top spot into second place, weighed 24-2 Saturday, ending the day with a combined weight of 77-2. While his limit Saturday was nowhere close to the 36-10 he weighed Thursday, and is off the record-setting pace that seemed entirely likely at the tournament’s start, it was still enough to keep him within striking distance of the top spot and the $100,000 top prize.
|
In third place Saturday was defending Toyota Angler of the Year Mike “Ike” Iaconelli who ended the day with the three-day total weight of 76-4. Ike brought another tournament limit weighing 24-3 to the scales Saturday lock down a spot inside the top five for Sunday’s final launch. Ike’s 25-pound-per-day goal seems to be holding true going into the final day.
Skeeter/Yamaha
pro Todd Faircloth blew the place
up Saturday with a monstrous 36-7
limit, anchored by a 10-11 beast.
The weighty day earned Faircloth
the Berkley Heavyweight award and
Big Bass honors concurrently, and
this three-day combined weight of
75-1 was enough to move him from
39th place into fourth overall
headed into Sunday’s final
round.
The ever-consistent Edwin Evers, ending the day in fifth place with a total weight of 71-4, brought 20-11 to the stage Saturday. Long-time pro Davy Hite crossed the stage with a five-fish limit weighing 21-13, giving
him a three-day total of 69-13 and sixth place when the day was
done. |

Ish Monroe proved that no one is safe on Amistad as he jumped from 26th place and slipped into the 12th-place cut spot with a limit weighing 23-6. The limit gave him a three-day total weight of 66-9 and bested Dean Rojas by just two ounces.
Here’s what Sunday’s line-up looks like:
7. Kevin VanDam 15 68-4
8. John Murray 15 67-1
8. Jeff Kriet 15 67-1
10. Skeet Reese 15 66-14
11. Ken Brodeur 15 66-12
12. Ish Monroe 15 66-9
